About Nancy Knudsen, M.Ed., LMFT

Nancy Knudsen, M.Ed., LMFT, is a Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Northampton, MA with 24 years experience in the field. While she has been a family systems therapist all along, Nancy has embraced EFT as a primary modality for working with couples since her first training externship with Dr. Sue Johnson in June 2009. Since then, she has followed up with supervision and advance training with the goal of becoming a certified EFT therapist by the end of 2010.

In addition to her clinical focus on relational problems between family members, Nancy also has expertise in the treatment of emotional trauma.  As an EMDR therapist, consultant, and teacher to other clinicians, Nancy has chosen to hone in on the overlap between the traumatic experience of the individual within the family system and the impact trauma has on the ability to relate with other family members.


EFT is a treatment approach that bridges the best of two worlds: the emotional experiences of the individuals in relationship and the ways partners interact within the relationship system itself. Using deep empathy as a way to connect with the emotional experiences of both partners, Nancy focuses on gradually strengthening the bond that has been disrupted.

Nancy earned a masters degree in Counseling and Consulting Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1984. From there she attended a two-year certificate program at the Kantor Family Institute in family therapy. Nancy completed her EMDR training in 1997 and became an EMDR Institute Facilitator in 1999. She completed a year long Post-Graduate Program at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in 2008. She has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Massachusetts since 1991 and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant since 2000. In June, 2009, she began her study of EFT with an externship with Sue Johnson in NYC, and has taken the Core Skills Advanced Training series with Shelly Del and George Faller in Scituate, MA to be completed in August, 2010.
